Supervision 24/April/2017

Arts C – 10.30am – 11.30

General Notes:

VIRAL -> define the term trough a reference or quote since the first time that is mentioned is important. Bring in again term/reference for each chapter.

Keep self-contained chapters so that they can be read separately but work en conjunto. This means taking the time to re-explain and frame in which terms I’m talking or using specific yet important topics like Viral, Culture, meme, etc.

“I borrow the definition of the viral from theorist… when he says…“ (theoretical scholarly foundation)

When I talk in terms of humour it seems to be more accurate to describe it as satire to narrow the term. The kind of humour is then satire since it is used as critique.

VITAL -> to take life of their own

Address the idea that it seems as though online everything is changing and the problematic is huge whereas sometimes the reality in the physical world is that nothing is happening, there is no change or it looks like nothing is happening. Ex. Saqueos en las calles en toda la República por el aumento a la gasolina cuando en realidad no sucede mucho en las calles. Or expressing discomfort in Trump or other causes bit little to no protest (marchas) are happening and it seems like just another normal day.

Doesn’t shift protocol -> still the same -> online % everyday -> this difference on online world and “real” world is another BORDER

ANALYSIS: Seems that I am using a user-centered design so mention it -> “I’m approaching from a user-centered design” since I’m focus on who the speaker is along with from where they are speaking (Mexican users creating memes online and platforms they use)

CREATIVE WORK:

Keep working on prototypes parallel to research work along with constant update of Log (Log can be divided into two, 1 creative work and 2 theoretical context)

Prepare the FINAL IDEA or concept on how I perceive the final project outcome, ex. as an installation, website, both, video project, etc. To have a clear picture and also start addressing the needs of renting a space or venue and see who or how I would approach to achieve this

Discuss with Mel (in the near future mini VIVA) my ideas since she is a photojournalist and ask her advice in terms of venue if I see my final project as an exhibition

Web exhibition? -> FINAL PROJECT ? -> Projectors + Visual TV’s (recall the Sweden Museum pictures of the visual exhibitions on video)

*Keep in mind that the Creative Zone Space in Physics department seems to cease to exist or we are not granted access anymore, maybe they are only remodeling but the new Attenborough Place could have a space to offer either that or book and prototype in the TV studio

STATEMENT -> ENCAPSULATE FINAL SHOW -> DIGITAL SKETCHES (explain how the exhibition would look like with, for example, with projection or computers) and use those sketches to APPROACH STUDIOS in Brighton

TO DO:

Submission Deadline 16th May

  • Chapter 1 & 2 (Draft Form)
  • DEMO’s of sound project & Landscape Meme project
  • Log of Website progress & notes

Send Desktop Recordings of Projects // DEMO videos // Include prototyping work which is already here posted as previous content

TRIGGERS FOR SOUND -> Makey Makey? -> INSTALLATION -> Remember to give context needed for non Mexican people experiencing the Installlation

General notes:

Since the written work is in English but sometimes incorporates usage of words in Spanish I’m encouraged to use the term as it is in Spanish allowing to explain the negotiation though language and why that word works better untranslated but also explaining the meaning in English.

Change order of paragraphs to fit better the general understanding, for example, the paragraph in page 4 of draft works better as Introduction since it reminds the actual thing happening in the writing.

Bring up-front the thematic: DIGITAL BORDERS and negotiations, accessibility to certain people and non-accessibility (rationale)

This piece of draft (Meme image analysis) could become the 1st chapter, which is why is important to keep in mind the bigger picture outline along with the central theme, look at variations in theme and maybe incorporate later a chapter I want to do on just video and only sound.

Expand and clear the picture of word meme by incorporating a bigger picture of Dawkins work, who disagrees with him? what are the limits of his work? on what way am I applying it to culture and specifically memes? Do a similar thing with Lemor Shifman analysis on stance, form, context analysing and saying what I feel it lacks or needs to be incorporated to better analyse my content.

Expand, add-on history to have a better comparison. Similarly to the way I incorporated briefly Day of the Dead and Aztecs customs to compare as older form of media. [foot-holes?] It’s good to hear more about cultural frameworks of Mexico to give contrast with new meme.

The general project is about the process memes go through to become viral and remain (become part of culture), the project is not about the origin of memes. to do with evolution rather than genesis. Nevertheless, there is something in the original that sticks in the mind and gets chosen to recreate or duplicate.

How to discuss, address meme? discussion, critique on Dawkins, expand more on Dawkins time of genetics, genome critique [discuss limits of the definition]

Incorporate in the discussion Mimesis/Alterity TAUSSIG since he not only mentions and incorporates relevant elements but also gets hold of culture and the past to understand the present, in other words, on how culture is replicated across space.

1st Draft is good to be a stream of consciousness, but for 2nd keep in mind bullet points outline to hook and hang to topic. [Another draft could incorporate corrections and tips given in workshops on language I’ve been attending for Academic writing]

Incorporate in writing [possibly] if useful commercial meme & file size. They came from the discussion on how I posted all memes I got on photoshop to be aware of their actual size and you can see how the small ones are made for phone and the big ones were created by commercial websites that want their content to get likes therefore someone with design knowledge created them like Pictoline. *Archive in memes in Milenio and Aristegui are also worth mentioning.

*Reappropriation* -Page 7 on draft – mimesis TAUSSIG incorporation. Find more solid references, negotiate through visual images.

Bring in more examples for distinction between my 3 groups on how they could also merge or become their own thing [1. Politics & The Wall 2. Mexican Culture 3. Pop Culture movies and film] concepts using borders

CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY Reference – Gillian Rose [read and search references]

MIMESIS/ALTERITY

– Taussig -> Walter Benjamin -> Why are people doing it? what is it doing globally? -> anthropology

affect/emotion lack or missing in technology research, genome, etc. Acknowledge limits of disciplines – Comes from the realisation that Digital Culture tends to focus on the development of hardware and software rather than on the cultural or person individual effect – Meme: I’m sad/upset but I send Memes all day, in a sadly way.

Possible new Outline?

Digital Borders & Negotiations
-Chapter image meme (Dawkins, Shifman)
-Chapter video (remix?)
-Chapter sounds (disrupt geographical place with sound)
-Chapter websites (Situationists)

Arts C229

First week of May probably the 5th is the next submission deadline – Annual Review
A piece of practice and writing will need to be submitted to show to a panel as a mock VIVA

The main topic that links both my writing on psychogeography and Trump memes together with my practice is BORDERS – digital boundaries and how they articulate with virtual and physical space

Need to come up with at least 3 few ideas of practice work
1*Map the Internet as neighborhoods (Netflix vs Yaske)
2*Trump/Peña documentation video era
3*Sound connects you to memory – Mexico Noise Archive
0* Pending* search what gives me inspiration…

Simon and Emile will send literature to review around soundscape psychogeography and Judith Butler (?) humour resistance

When doing Interactive projects in arduino or processing do not attempt to do the techy light a bulb one or stuff since there is no point but rather incorporate from the beginning and work with material used in writing, for example, video and pictures or wall pics resolution, etc. Doing test that connect with work to be less ephemeral ex. Trumpet (trump) hair using processing and visual techniques

Use imagery of my work and screen record the test as video to show process

NEXT DEADLINE

Writing – Send something by March 6 April by noon
MeetingMarch 9 Thru at 11.30
Use Interactive Project audit class to develop Practical work

Arts C229

2nd year of PhD is after 6 terms of research

  • A Panel Report will be asked in which a sample of work along with an annual review will be needed for submission.
  • A short draft chapter, composition or practice piece accompanied by a 500 word commentary contextualizing it within the overall thesis
  • A thesis panel will read it and form discussion in a mock VIVA experience to demonstrate how research is progressing

EXPECTED DATE – JUNE

Emile will share the process on how twitter bot are created to create experimentation work along that, with the discussion on how fictional worlds are created online and how maybe through twitter bots we can see how the narrative emerges or how this bubbles break through each other, connect or aislar from each other.

In Psychogeography there is usually a character which is the one having an experience on space, for the visual part of my work I could create a narrative in which a character surfs/walks online space and how sounds could trigger a non physical location, for example, exploring alongside a stream of peñabots in a hashtag on twitter, how people interact on Disney movie live in Latin American Spanish sharing their feelings of the movie, but suddenly having this typical Mexican sounds of physical space like camotes, tamales, se compra lavadoras, etc. both are part of your digital and cultural bubble.

In México (December):

Mapping space and the Internet by using a zoom recorder or hand equipment to record video of places used in previous experiments (Google Maps footage of streets because I didn’t have access and time to find raw footage), record sounds I intend to use (List in White Notebook filed as Mexico Archive Sounds) and interviews to people to grasp the feeling of Trump election and differentiate between the experience as a Mexican in UK and the Facebook stream along with a Mexican in Mexico with a similar Facebook feed (Fun aspect, memes, mocking, etc.)

  • Create cut-out paper and prototyping in paper for visual experimentation of digital aspects
  • Record findings by scheduling, for example, logging to Twitter and Facebook 3 times a week and archiving material to use in the future for visual
  • Create a Field Diary in which to keep rigorous writing alongside the capture of content, for example, Tor experimentation and ideas popping in my head archiving the material along with the notes and ideas I got to expand later
  • The thesis or Field Diary is personal and private so clips, pictures, video can come along with written work (Archive + Field Diary) to organize thoughts later on video, meme, sounds, observations and why I felt that way since it;s all constantly changing and evolving in the Digital but also the topics like Trump election, Brexit, etc.
  • Post-it could be a good way to later better organize notes since I already have some notes in both cuadernos used for the master and PhD audit classes as this would then become a referencia to the digital source (video, meme, sound, etc.)

SEND BEFORE 31ST JANUARY OR AFTER PRIVATE STUDY WEEK

A Literature Review of the things being read at the moment alongside new comments and evolving of previous work (Remix, Societe of the Spectacle, Manovich, Identities in Digital thing I was going to do for Sally in Culture Identities and Social Practices)

Creative work recorded in Mexico and created by experimenting with it and paper prototyping of digital space mapping or film collage, etc.

Topics to cover (rambling overview): Peñabots comparison with strategy in USA bots, #NotMyPresident comparison with #NoEsMiPresidente, Live movies being displayed on Facebook for entertainment tackling Digital Borders (Disney Movies in Latin American) along with a new mapping of emotions in people since they send feeling faces through the movie, funny memes created around a specific topic #YaChole, Trump and the wall, ya se que no aplauden, Profeco tagging for Buen Fin inflación de precios, Tor Browser being not neutral but rather random since it randomly asigns IP so ads do not dissapear but rather are wrongly targeted comprising Digital Borders topic of neutral since you could still realize from where you are and access to content will now vary in a different way, along with all the things that limit you like frame size of monitor being displayed if you select expandir pantalla, empresas that became marketing oriented from being fan made in the beggining like Drama fever and Viki coming from access to Dramas sub by fans now being like Netflix, etc. etc. etc. …

Emile Devereaux
Silverstone 13.30-14.30

There is a need to start thinking in the solidity that this PhD while give me regarding my future choice of career either to create a portfolio to work in the digital arts after graduation or build up knowledge and how-to to teach in Academia. Need to start discussing which would be the path I would like to immerse myself taking in consideration the opportunities or areas I would be able to explore in here and how I would like to developed them in the future in Mexico or how those two can create a bridge to future further possibilities.

I also need to take a closer look at my references by scamming through my main chosen sources and seeing their own chosen references to create a much more stronger direct link with the fields since being honest Remix work seems to be quite new in terms of how is talking about it so in the Academia world it would be expected to use those references but also bare in mind that I hold some other main sources that are people recognizable enough in the field to bare ground and create a link that sustains my research, for example, Manovich’s work. I need to find people I reflect with and find their writing engaging and interesting since they would be the ones to backup my work and also I need to like them since I will have to spend a lot of time researching them, so there is a need of finding and reading more references to at least have one main figure per area of my thesis ex. Culture, Semiotics, Geography, Media History, Digital Arts, etc.

In other words, there is a need to find references that would convince of relevance, that I am an authority in the academic world to speak using this Framework, since this is the idea or look in the academic world in order to build a voice of your own and given the risk in the concept of Remix since right now is popular but it might shift, change or vanish I need to balance this to appeal to academic skeptics about my work (Like in the scholarship, I proved why it is relevant and why it is important to study and in which ways it will benefit the country)

The people I already identify with might work as starting point like Castells work on Networks – 1 person per area -> recognizable figure

New Literature

*Michael Taussig – Mimesis and Alterity
Performance & Anthropology (talks about appropriation, marketing, tribes)
*Walter Benjamin – “Doctrine of the similar” (1933)
*Situationists – Guidebord / Recombinign text (semiotics) / Detournment Derrida
*The politics of aesthetics – Jacques Ranciere

Important: Write my response to Manovich work I find interesting and/or don’t exactly align with like the post on Facebook about how people from developed countries would never go to a developed country to study humanities since they know what is of real value (Idea is vague and might be misrepresented but as a starting point to discuss is relevant to see my understanding and point of view while developing my writing)

Internet – Culture – Networks

Research Paper – Deadline September 22

5,000 words

*Learning -> Processing Sketches (screen recording)
*Testing -> experiment with content I might use in projects
*Track of correspondence with other people involved or contacted to work/access info (Youtubers possibly to look at their data to map Mexican Culture) and/or Log of work and correspondance I put out there trying to make it work or seeing how it did or did not got share ex. (Mexican Politics Remix)

Specify what I would like to submit and send the improved chapter to Simon & Emile as a quick description outline on the deadline Sept 22 (I’m thinking of maybe choosing a chapter to further develop theory like chapter 1 and chapter 3 to start writing about the testing and possible outcome of the first project)

In SPRING -> Interactive Project Development

Set up a group of people to gather together and work or test processing, arduino, etc. to create collaboration or just try in each gathering for example to hook up the kinect to the computer every week (Look for people doing PhD and/or external Brighton arduino/processing groups)

In a whole, To Do List:

  1. Elegir personajes a seguir que me guste su estilo (Leer, Escribir, Corregir)
  2. Planear Outline de entrega al 22 de Sept – 250 palabras al día
  3. Test/Learning of ideas
  4. Buscar clases de arduino/processing o crear grupo de gente
  5. Escribir opiniones de ideas relacionadas ex. Manovich post
  6. Pensar en el futuro del PhD – teaching/digital art/ etc.

Upi-doh! I want to be like you…/Political Remix Video/

As I was working on my Research Proposal draft on Remix Culture, or rather avoiding working on it, I just stumble on Political Remix Video work of Diran Lyons and I think it will  definitely inspire me to create some work on my own, I’m still deciding whether or not to join the Political Remix sphere focusing on Mexico as I think it could be interesting to work on juxtaposition ideas happening as well as using narrative remix on language by using both English and Spanish content (which are both things I intend to explore in my research but on different topics).

Since a couple of days back I’ve been gathering some ideas but whenever I think I got it, I get a mental block or think I should really focus on the proposal and research first, so for now I’m just gonna post the general ideas and what I found inspirational and interesting in Lyon’s work from his editing technique to the way he posts content under fair use and the juxtaposition narrative.

First of all he uses some of the already known techniques of famous Political Remix videos like Obama singing a popular song but as well incorporates a technique of juxtaposition in which content repetition allows for a new way of thinking or critique as well as narrative response is also important.

For example, in the Mexico VS Trump video the constant repetition allows to actually think about, in my particular case as Mexican living abroad at the moment, on the many times Trump relies on immigrant speech reduced to the well known video “Mexicans are rapists” it makes me understand in a way why everyone when they hear I’m Mexican (at least here in the UK) they laugh and immediately ask me what I think about dumb Trump and the wall.

On the other hand, in a way and when taken out of context it empowers to hear so many times the world Mexico repeated over and over in an obsessive way, to create an illusion of importance on the supposed “fact” that whatever Mexico does impacts USA “Mexico is killin’ us” (a very poor statement but one that when positioned backwards as whatever USA does impacts Mexico, we as Mexicans sometimes take for granted)

The other part to take in consideration is how this video may impact differently on: Mexicans born in USA (already a conflict as there are people that recognize themselves as American with a Mexican background on culture they share thanks to their traditions and language passed on by their parents but there is also Mexicans that regardless of living in USA they still recognize themselves as Mexicans not only being part of the culture but also of the country as sometimes their families are still back in Mexico while they work) with a Mexican background and Mexicans born in Mexico moving to the USA in hopes of finding a better way of life and Mexicans that won’t go abroad or would go elsewhere but are now addressed as immigrant due to the discourse). In a way funny because I have an uncle which I saw briefly a few months ago who is working in the USA but his family is in Mexico and while talking about VISA and how the government is paying them to go and work there, I forgot to even ask him his opinion on Trump, but true to be told the Trump issue felt different in Mexico, at least to me, it seemed less important like I couldn’t care less, we all just had a laugh and watch the funny videos rather than critically discuss it. Then again we tend to do that a lot so now you get why in Happy Feet when they talk about rough times they show how the little pinguins are rather partying with a particular accent, hint, in Spanish language they are Cuban XD

In contrast, there might also be a different reaction on the video regarding other Latinos looking for a better way of life in USA, are they mad/glad/couldn’t care less that they are being ignored or taken as being the same as Mexicans in the Trump discourse? And there is also the question on how others addressed or attacked by Trump discourse feel like when watching this or others outside of the Trump attack sphere looking to amuse themselves with the times Trump contradicts himself which has become quite a trend on funny videos recently

I think i went to far with my choro mareador so let me go back to the actual editing of the video and my ideas on how it could be implemented on the Mexican Politics, I was thinking on looking for the most recent speech on Peña Nieto since as far as I remember he has gone around recently claiming to care on Human Rights whereas the Ayotzinapa case and violence elsewhere is still happening so a reconstruction on how many times he actually talks or mention the word Human Rights in contrast with images portraying the actual state of Mexico might have an impact on the line of discourse in juxtaposition to the situations Mexico is facing at the moment

P.S. I also want to address the way in which Mexicans perceive Peña´s eternal European tour as a way to evade actually being in the country and facing the problems that seem to increase by day, it might be interesting to have something similar to the 10 Beatles Songs Explain Donald Trump but with Peña traveling around the world recently stopping because he now seems to get addressed by outsiders as well on Human Rights topics (News in Spanish) or something similar to the strong video above that coercively allows the President to speak aloud of a specific topic (Peña’s visit one year later to Ayotzinapa disocurse)

It’s also important to see how Lyons frames and cites his work in the description box:

He usually has a title, credits to who edited or where the idea came from, explanation of the remix idea and then ***FAIR USE*** 17 US Code § 107 followed by a list of all the content used in order of appearance

  • EXAMPLE

Description Box:

This political remix video samples footage from 35 Hollywood productions to further consider Pastor Jeremiah Wright’s 2003 sermon “Confusing God and Government.” The visual content and sound materials are combined, recontextualized, and juxtaposed here to create a critical third meaning. According to Code 6 in Center For Social Media’s Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video (http://ift.tt/1Wnk0Mg;), where the use of a single song is used to ground a collage of clips and images, they hold that “this kind of activity is covered by fair use to the extent that the reuse of copyrighted works creates new meaning by juxtaposition. Combining the speeches by two politicians and a love song, for example, as in ‘Bush Blair Endless Love’ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtEH6w…) changes the meaning of all three pieces of copyrighted material.” As such, this work constitutes a FAIR USE, US Code § 107.

Finally, some other ideas going on in my head include the women rights march making me thing on the difference it has just walking in public space contrasting Mexico City Centre to Brighton City Centre a topic that arise from the exposure I had to the pictures of the march in D.F and the Morras video coinciding with footage I took of walking alone here in Brighton

//platform.instagram.com/en_US/embeds.js

I also have some ideas regarding Peña’s discourse used in Spanish popular songs and Mad Max Mexico (idea from El Pulso de la República)

But for now I’ll just go back to my proposal and actually making sense of how I will aim to explore Remix Culture…soon!

Use examples of real time situations of how I understand the term to make it more interesting to read and keep on exploring academic writing vs. interesting writing ex. I saw an article about a white guy using dreadlocks and the controversy it generated around when is it appropriate to call it appropriation, appreciation or assimilation and how that translates in a way to remix culture and videos, for example not only on Kai’s dreadlocks used as image to his music but also as to which terms am I calling it appropriation of content or appreciation

Slow down, instead of assuming the reader understand the quote in the same way as I do, slow down on the final outcome and analyse each quote explaining in which terms I talk about it, if I need to use the full quote or just a specific part and never using a quote as the end of a paragraph but rather giving my point of view on it.

My writing could use remix as a way of how I write in post-structuralist in which the text is also a sign of the term remix, nevertheless, before attempting that it may be useful to go through writing where I have quotes to guide the reader back to my discussion

Explain what that field is doing, I’m using readings from this field because it allows to think in terms of space –> explain the framework –> why is it useful, for example, to explain in terms of space –> knowledge what is different, where I see the connections across with geography? –> why are they different?

It is ok, to use references even if they are in Spanish as they add to interest in the reader, even if they come from a newspaper or local news they can be added as source in the bibliography to understand in which terms I describe theory when talking about Remix Culture with local examples from Mexico
